Passage Analysis of Part One
(Passage covers the final three pages of the novel) See attached.
In this passage by William Golding from his novel, Lord of the Flies, symbol and imagery are used to prove that the boys can come back from savagery and be children again. At the end of the novel the boys are rescued by an officer. The officer’s “white-topped cap” and “white drill” are in contrast to the “black” sky and “brown” and “painted boys” (Golding). The colors, white for the officer and black/brown for the boys, are used as a symbol of civilization vs. savagery. The officer brings order to chaos and as an adult, allows the boys to return to their role as children again because the presence of authority releases the boys from responsibility. In addition to using color to show the return journey from savagery to civilization, imagery is also used. [Insert imagery example and analysis here]. Ironically, the boys are caught in the same situation as the officer, a representation of the larger world/society, in the battle to remain civilized.
